How do you identify what exactly your limiting beliefs are and what are some of the things you can do to change these into positive, more empowering beliefs?
In todays episode of The Business of Perfectionism I run through the two easiest ways to identify your limiting beliefs and discuss how you can begin to reprogram your subconscious mind to no longer believing that these thoughts you have about yourself are true.

So firstly, lets dive into what exactly is a limiting belief.
A limiting belief is a thought, opinion or decision that you have made yourself that you believe to be the truth.
They are statements that usually start with - I couldn’t, I can’t, I could never, I don’t, I am not, I should or shouldn’t or I have to.
They are called limiting beliefs because they generally have a negative impact on our lives and stop us from doing the things that we really want to do.
Over your lifetime you will very likely experience varying versions of your limiting beliefs, however when we dive in to uncover the root cause, we often find that a series of limiting beliefs, of particular thoughts you have about yourself, all stem from single core beliefs.
For example, I am not enough.
These core beliefs are usually formed within our subconscious mind by the time we are just 7 years old.
They could be beliefs that have been inadvertently passed down to you, for example, you might have heard someone say over and over again that rich people are evil, and now subconsciously you believe that to be true.
Or perhaps you had someone in your life, maybe a parent or teacher who always pushed you to do your very best, however your best never seemed to be quite good enough - and you have now carried this belief, of nothing you do is good enough, with you into adult life without even realising it.
We all carry limiting beliefs around with us, some of them you will not even realise that you have until a particular event. It could be when you start your business, when you’re offered a promotion at work, when you see someone making a lot of money, or when someone new comes into your life who has very different opinions and beliefs to your own.
So how do you know if you have any limiting beliefs and how do you know what they are?
There are two really simple ways to begin to identify any limiting beliefs that you might have.
The first. Pay attention to what you say, and more importantly - what you think.
So here is a challenge for you: for 24 hours, pay close attention to all of your thoughts and the conversations you’re having. What words are you using and what are you saying?
Every time to catch yourself saying something like:
I couldn’t do that
I don’t think I’ll ever be as successful as they are
There’s no way I could make that much money
I suck at creating Reels
I could never speak on stage
I should just stick to what I know
These are just some examples, you will have your own dialogue, your own thoughts.
Every time you have one of these thoughts or use a statement like this, write it down, every single one of them, for at least a day.
The second easy way to identify a limiting belief is to pay attention to when you feel triggered by someone or something.
It could be a conversation you see unfolding in a Facebook Group, something a colleague said, or it could be seeing someone around you achieve something you believe is what you want, however you’re feeling like that just isn’t possible for you, or it’s never going to happen for you.
The next thing I want you to do, once you have collected all of your negative beliefs and written them down, is go through them one by one, and ask yourself, is this true?
And I am willing to bet, right here and now, that it is not.
One by one, go through your list and reframe each of your limiting beliefs.
I will never create the financial freedom I crave within my business
Absolutely not true. Anything is possible for you, if you really want it and you commit to making it your reality, you will achieve the financial success you want.
I could never make that much money.
The reframe might be - it is possible and safe for me to make as much money as I desire.
I am not talented enough to achieve x
Reframe: I have so many talents and am capable of learning all of the skills I need
I should just stick with what I know
Reframe: This life is mine, and I have the ability to create whatever it is I want in this lifetime
This work is ongoing, no, you do not have to write down all of your thoughts and the limiting beliefs you have every day, however every time you recognise one, catch yourself immediately.
Ask yourself - is this true.
And when you realise that it’s not true - because they never are, reframe - what empowering belief can you replace this with?
If you’d like to go one step further, which I always recommend you do, commit to a regular journaling practice.
Where you practice writing out your new empowering beliefs.
Remembering, what we focus on and what we pay attention to grows - so we want to give the positive empowering belief all of our focus and our energy, and rewire the subconscious mind to believe the new empower beliefs we are creating.
The more you can do this, the more you can pull yourself up on these limiting beliefs the better you will get at recognising that they simply are not true and the more you will begin to believe that anything is possible for you.
