About this episode.
One of the biggest mistakes I see business owners making today is relying on one single platform to do all of the marketing work for them - usually social media, or more specifically, Instagram.
In this episode we dive into what exactly a multi-channel, holistic strategy might look like for your business and why it’s so important to diversify your marketing.
---
Today I really wanted to share with you more on holistic marketing, or multi channel marketing and why it’s so important, and how it will really help your business thrive.
One of the biggest problems I see arise in business today, is people relying too much on one single platform to do all of the work for them.
And I totally get why we do it, platforms like Instagram have been instrumental in the growth of so many small businesses, it’s relatively easy to use, you don’t need a budget and for a while now we’ve all been told by so many people that all you need to grow a business is instagram.
However, the brands you know and love, the ones that are really sought after, the ones you feel like you just keep seeing everywhere and that are consistently growing, didn’t get there because they relied on a single platform to market their business.
And you shouldn’t be either.
To help you better understand why I really promote and encourage a multi-channel, holistic approach to marketing - I want to share a story with you..
Back in 2015 I actually opened my own online childrenswear store, and it was at this time that I feel like using social media to market your business, became serious business.
Instagram was blowing up, it was THE platform and some brands were posting on there hourly - during the day.
I so clearly remember it because keeping up with instagram felt like a full time job of its own - and these people that were posting hourly literally had an in-house content creation team, there is no way most of us can keep up with that.
The chronological feed really meant that you needed to post multiple times per day so you got in front of your audience. I guess the pro back then was there was less competition and you grew a lot faster.
But it was a lot of work and effort and content creation honestly used to drive me mad.
And it wasn’t even where my results came from, and it was the same as a lot of other small businesses I knew at the time too.
Prior to opening my own business, I worked in marketing for close to 10 years and over that time event’s formed a large part of our marketing strategies, at every company I worked for.
I think it was because of this that events also became a focus of mine when I opened up my own business too - I’d seen the power of them.
I knew I needed to get my name out there so I decided to attend a series of in-person events that would help put me directly in front of my ideal customer.
These events gave me a lot of foot traffic, they helped me build my email list, I had referral cards for visitors to take with discount codes so I could see what channels were working when they were claimed.
I would often make more at one event, than I would sometimes make in a week or more online.
I would send one email to my list of 300 at the time and could generate up to $1000, sometimes more, in sales - I was lucky enough to have a really good customer retention rate.
I would get consistent traffic to my website from referrals, I signed up to relevant directories, some were free, some came with a small fee, some were off the back of events - all which helped to drive traffic and make sales.
I collected reviews and social proof, encouraged and acknowledged my customers for tagging me in their social media content which obviously also helped to build my brand.
Looking for other marketing opportunities, ways to reach more of your ideal customers, nurture existing clients and to build your brand is something I am really passionate about helping my clients do as well.
One of my clients tripled her monthly income within only 3 months (and kept there) by making a few small tweaks to her marketing strategy, she added in email marketing and refined her social media strategy which included more collaboration, and we focused on mapping out what was happening and when, what we were promoting, all which contributed to the jump in sales.
Another client jumped on an opportunity to provide clothing to someone organizing a shoot for a magazine, the call out came via social media, the collaboration positioned her next to so incredible reputable and sought after brands, as as a result she made 4 times her usual revenue that month
Social media is going to form a huge part of your overall marketing strategy. It’s where your customers are hanging out, it provides you with an incredible opportunity to chat with them directly, receive feedback, ideas, inspiration and build relationships.
However it’s just one way to market your business.
You don’t have to do everything at once, I know we’ve kind of mentioned a lot of ideas here and ways you can market your business, but I just encourage you to think about one small thing you can implement this week that’s going to help you make more sales.
What’s one thing you can do that’s going to help you get in front of more of your ideal customers? How can you reach them? Where else are they hanging out?
Are you ready for a second social media platform? Is there someone you’ve been too afraid to approach for a collaboration? Is it time you started asking for customer reviews? Could your website and SEO use a little love? When was the last time you sent an email?
There are so many amazing ways to market your business and these are only a few of them, but they will all help towards increasing brand awareness, attracting more of your ideal customers and making more sales.
